Will traditional culture disappear in the age of globalisation?

"Ok, today I'm doing a Part 3 style discussion instead of a Part 2 cue card.

"So here's the question: some people say traditional culture will fade away as the world becomes more connected. To what extent do I agree with that?"

"Personally, I'd argue that culture does not simply vanish. What disappears is often only the surface, like special costumes or big festivals, while the deeper values, the way a community sees family or nature, tend to survive.

"Take my own background as an example. It is a place of cultural significance, 这个表达我在 09-04 文化那期学过，比 a culturally important place 地道。The point is, a local tradition can become a field of study, and that actually keeps it alive."

"But there is a real risk. When one language or one style of dressing dominates, smaller traditions can give way to the mainstream.

"So my answer would be: culture does not disappear, but transforms. 用 09-09 科技那期的说法，globalisation has turned isolation into connection.

"What I find most interesting is that technology can help preserve culture. A study buddy comes in handy not just for English, but for keeping old crafts alive too."

• I'd argue that ...

• What disappears is ... while ... tend to survive 对比并列，while 表"而"，突出表里差异。

• not ... but ... 否定加肯定对照，口语 Part 3 极好用：culture does not disappear, but transforms。

• give way to 动词短语，表"被取代、让位于"，比 be replaced by 画面感强。

• has turned A into B 转变句式（09-09 学过），这里接 isolation / connection。

• ❌ "learn culture" → ✅ "learn about a culture / understand a culture"（culture 不与 learn 直接搭"学文化"本身）

• ❌ "keep the culture" → ✅ "preserve a tradition / keep a tradition alive / pass it on"

• ❌ "culture is very important" → ✅ "culture is of great significance / plays a vital role"

• ❌ "I very like this tradition" → ✅ "I'm really fond of this tradition"（09-04

• disappear → fade / vanish / die out

• preserve → safeguard / keep alive / pass on

• tradition → custom / heritage / practice

• important → of great significance / vital / instrumental

1. of great cultural significance 极具文化意义（替换 very important culturally；09-04 的 a place of cultural significance 今天扩成通用搭配）

2. pass on a tradition 传承传统（09-06 家庭学过 pass on knowledge，今天跨话题复现，证明旧词能换场景）

• cultivate /ˈkʌltɪveɪt/ v.

• civilization /ˌsɪvəlaɪˈzeɪʃn/ n.

• preserve /prɪˈzɜːv/ v.

• 今日新句型精学：#19 I'd argue that ...（Part 3 立场表达）★09-10。例：I'd argue that culture does not disappear, but transforms.

Smaller traditions are giving way to the global mainstream.

★09-07。例：Rather than letting old crafts fade, we should record them.

Collective memory and the making of culture

The French sociologist Maurice Halbwachs argued in the 1920s that memory is not only personal; it is also social. He named this "collective memory", the shared past a group keeps alive through stories, rituals, and places. In this view, a culture is less a fixed list of customs than a living memory that a community rebuilds every generation. When people walk an old town or repeat a festival, they are not copying the past; they are re-enacting a memory that binds them together. The word "memory" itself comes from the Latin memor, meaning mindful, the same root behind commemorate, to keep something in mind on purpose. For anyone learning a culture, the real task is not to memorise facts, but to enter a memory larger than oneself.

• 族3 cult/col：culture ★09-04、cultivate ★09-10、agriculture ★09-10、horticulture、colonial。串联句（背）：Culture grows wherever people cultivate the land and care for it.

• 新族 civ：civilization ★09-10、civil、civic、citizen。 A civilization is built by citizens who act with civic sense.

• 新族 serv：preserve ★09-10、conserve、reserve、observe。 We preserve the old, conserve what is rare, and observe how the past lives on.

• 09-06 家庭｜pass on knowledge / heritage — 今天说传统不消失而是 transform，关键就是一代代 pass it on。

• 09-09 科技｜study buddy / come in handy / turn A into B — 数字化工具能 record old crafts，等于给文化传承找了个 study buddy，comes in handy；全球化 has turned isolation into connection（09-09 原句），文化也因此从封闭走向互联。
